Summary
In the last two years the retinal peripheries of 66 premature infants with a birthweight of 1200 g or less were examined. The examinations were carried out a few weeks after birth using a Goldmann contact lens. In the total of 66 eyes only one retinal lesion (a stage I lesion) was found; this corresponds to 1.5% of the cases. Comparison of these with the authors' previous data suggests that continuous transcutaneous oxygen monitoring might have a valuable effect in the prevention of retinopathy in premature infants.
