The medical community in Libya has recently lost a distinguished physician and endocrinologist. Doctor Abdulwahab Mustafa El Barsha, of Benghazi, passed away on December 16, 2018, in a tragic road traffic accident. His sudden death at 45 years of age shocked his family, friends, students, and many of his patients.
Abdulwahab was born in Benghazi on January 10, 1974. He obtained his MBChB from Al Arab Medical University in 1998. He was a 2006 graduate of the Libyan board for medical specialties in internal medicine, and in 2007, he obtained his MRCP (UK). In 2009, he received his MSc in diabetes from the University of Warwick, Coventry (UK), and in 2010, he was awarded the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Certificate in Endocrinology and Diabetes.
After his graduation, he worked as a senior house officer for 4 years in the three teaching hospitals of Benghazi (Aljala, the October 7, and Al-Jamahiriya) and in 2006, he was promoted to a specialist of internal medicine at the October 7, hospital and in 2016, he was promoted to consultant of internal medicine at Benghazi Medical Center. He worked as a teaching staff at the medical faculty at University of Benghazi since 2006, and during this period, he was actively involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Abdulwahab was a keen researcher, and he published over 15 research papers during his career. He was an editor in at least two academic medical journals, and he was regularly involved in the organization of local medical conferences since 2010, as well as in the organization of different medical courses. In addition to practicing medicine, medical education, and medical research, he loved history, and computer science. He was dedicated to his profession with an excellent academic reputation. He was a hardworking and very kind person. His relations with his patients, students, and colleagues was exemplary. He will be remembered for devoting his working life to his patients and students. Abdulwahab will be missed by his family, patients, students, and colleagues. May Allah have mercy on his soul.
