Quantitative EMG: Must 20 Motor Units be Measured or are 3 Units Sufficient?
Abstract
Fritz Buchthal’s contributions to electromyography are of fundamental value. It is widely accepted that for carrying out an adequate quantitative electromyography study, it is necessary to measure the duration of action potentials of 20 different motor units. It is not only for theoretical reasons that this approach is not reasonable. Instead, by measuring a few motor units, which are clearly outside the range of the normal, designated as “outliers”, it is possible to reach reliable electromyography findings.
