The adrenocortical function was studied in adult patients with hyperthyroidism or with myxoedema. In 19 hyperthyroid women, the Cortisol secretion rate was significantly increased (30.6 ± 7.4 mg/d vs 17.8 ± 4.8 mg/d in normal controls); it was significantly decreased in 14 hypothyroid patients (13.7 ± 5.0 mg/d vs 20.5 ± 5.4 mg/d in matched controls). Changes in urinary excretion of Cortisol metabolites were more pronounced than in Cortisol secretion. Adrenocortical modifications were mostly reversible after recovery.
