Pfefferminzöl beim Reizdarmsyndrom – ein Update
Publication History
Publication Date:
03 July 2009 (online)

Summary
Peppermint oil in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. An update
Recent investigations confirm that the essential oil of peppermint is a reasonable therapeutic option in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. Spasmolytic effects of the essential oil have been demonstrated both in vitro on isolated gut segments and in vivo on healthy voluteers and in gastrointestinal diagnosis. Menthol, the main component of peppermint oil, contributes considerably to its spasmolytic effect. Peppermint oil proved to be superior to a placebo in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome in short-term and medium-term studies.
