Introduction

The responsible professional organisations have reached a consensus on the basic points for publication of a (German) national disease management guideline “Diabetes − Structured Education Programmes” in the context of the programme for national disease management guidelines NVL of the German Medical Association (BÄK), the German Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) and the German Association of Scientific Medical Organisations (AWMF).

This consensus arose through an agreement of experts of the German Diabetes Association (DDG), the German College of General Practitioners and Family Physicians (DEGAM), the Diabetes Commission of the Saxony State Medical Association, SLÄK (FKDS), the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA) and the Association of the Diabetes Counselling and Education Professions in Germany (VDBD).

The development process was organised by the German Agency for Quality in Medicine (ÄZQ) between January 2006 and May 2012.

The basic methodical approach is described in the NVL methods report [1]. In addition, a guidelines report is prepared for each NVL (available under http://www.versorgungsleitlinien.de).

This document is the first version of the long version of the “National Disease Management Guidelines for Diabetes – Structured Education Programmes”.

All German disease management guidelines (NVLs) contain the following components:

  • NVL Short Version with presentation of the main care points and graduated recommendations

  • NVL Long Version – in addition, with the levels of evidence and links to the underlying sources

  • NVL Guidelines Report

  • NVL Guidelines for Patients

  • NVL Aids for medical practices, such as, for example, short briefings for medical staff and pocket versions for physicians.
