Abstract

The evaluation of the macrocirculation is done by recording of blood pressure and heart rate or, in addition, the use of invasive monitoring systems. In order to assess the microcirculation in daily practice blood lactate measurements are often performed. Since recently, newer systems are used that allow a direct visualization of the perfusion of the smallest vessels. For these, the diagnostic and prognostic validity has been approved. In this review the different modalities to assess the microcirculation in critically ill patients will be presented.
