Abstract

The treatment of varicose veins in Germany has undergone a considerable shift within the last 15 years. While in the past the crossectomy and stripping (C/S) of varicose veins was accepted unquestioningly, a multitude of alternative methods is available today. Wide experiences have been collected with the endovenous laser ablation (EVLA). Latest pulications show no inferiority of EVLA to C/S concerning effectivity and rate of recurrence. Side effects are seen less often in EVLA and fitness for work is reached faster after EVLA. After all, EVLA can be recommended for patients with varicose veins. However, in complicated cases with distinct varicose veins and convolutes, the „classical“ stripping method still seems to be more adequate.
