In pneumologischen Kliniken/Facharztpraxen werden zahlreiche Patienten mit chronisch obstruktiver Lungenerkrankung und Emphysem behandelt (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease = COPD). Anfangs kann die COPD insbesondere mit Bronchiodilatativa gut behandelt werden. Später geht die Fähigkeit, ausreichend CO2 abzuatmen, in zunehmendem Maße verloren, so dass eine maschinelle Beatmung notwendig wird.
