Der Europäische Fachverband für Pflegepersonal in der Dialyse und Transplantation und weiteres paramedizinisches Personal zur Unterstützung von Pflege, Therapie und Support von Nierenpatienten (EDTNA/ERCA) sah von Beginn an als Hauptthemen seiner Arbeit „Bildung, Standardisierung und Forschung (Education, Standards, Research)“ für Pflegende und Betreuende von Nierenpatienten. Während Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung sowie Standards in Pflege, Behandlung und Betreuung uns heute als selbstverständlich für den Pflegeprozess erscheinen, ist die Forschung das unabdingbare und trotzdem in vielen Ländern noch fehlende Element, das den Pflegeprozess vervollständigt und voranbringt, die Pflegepraxis überprüft sowie anpasst und sein Ergebnis verbessert.
