Abstract
An intramolecular C–H silylmethylation of benzylic alcohol derivatives catalyzed by a visible-light-photoexcited palladium complex was developed. Irradiation of the palladium complex with blue LEDs resulted in efficient activation of a C–I bond, and subsequent intramolecular radical arylation afforded siloxacycle products. Selective protonation or oxidation of the C–Si bond of the cyclized materials afforded ortho-methylated and ortho-hydroxymethylated derivatives of the benzylic alcohol derivatives.

- 14 2,2-Diisopropyl-5-methoxy-2,3,7,8,9,9a-hexahydronaphtho[1,8-de][1,2]oxasiline (2a); Typical Procedure A 7 mL glass vial containing a stirring bar was charged with silylated alcohol 1a (60.0 mg, 0.140 mmol), Pd(OAc)2 (3.1 mg, 0.0139 mmol), Xantphos (16.1 mg, 0.0278 mmol), Cs2CO3 (136 mg, 0.417 mmol), and Bu4NI (51.3 mg, 0.139 mmol) under argon. Anhyd benzene (1.4 mL, 0.1 M) was added, and the reaction vessel was capped. The vial was then irradiated with a blue LED lamp (12 W; Sigma-Aldrich SynLED Parallel Photoreactor) at rt for 12 h. The resulting mixture was diluted with EtOAc, filtered through Celite, and concentrated under a reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography [silica gel, hexane–toluene (1:1)] to give a white sticky oil; yield: 41.9 mg (0.138 mmol, 99%). - 20 Alternatively, preference for an electron-rich aromatic group in the substrates can be interpreted as indicating that the preferred pathway involves the SET of radical II to the neighboring Pd(I), followed by a deprotonation step. However, we do not have clear experimental or calculated results to distinguish these hypotheses at present.
For rare examples of electron-neutral and -rich arenes:
