Der plötzliche Herztod ist weiterhin eine der Haupttodesursachen weltweit. Die kardiopulmonale Reanimation bietet die einzige Überlebenschance. Die Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation arbeitet mit der Schaffung eines extrakorporalen Kreislaufs und einer Oxygenierung, um die Funktion des Herzens bzw. des Kreislaufs und/oder der Lunge zu überbrücken. Durch eCPR entsteht vor allem ein Gewinn an Zeit bis zur Behebung der Ursachen für den Kreislaufstillstand.
