Approximately 20 years ago, Julia Terzis and Sal Shenaq compiled the experience and opinions of several recognized leaders in the management of brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). They created a valuable resource for all of us involved in the care of these injuries, demonstrating a wide diversity of opinions and approaches to the treatment of BPBI,

With advances in prenatal care, the incidence of BPBI cases has reduced over time. However, many of us continue to see the full gamut of BPBI injuries. While it is accepted that many of the children with less severe injuries will go on to recover spontaneously, many—especially those with more severe injuries—may benefit from intervention.

Controversy still seems to surround virtually every aspect of the diagnosis and management of BPBI. For this edition of the Seminars, the authors were asked to share not only their own guidelines for management of BPBI, but to also address specific technical nuances. Our goal was to provide the reader with practical information in the care of patients with BPBI.
