Dimethyl phthalide-3-phosphonates having various substituents on the benzene ring were effectively synthesized by the one-pot reaction of dimethyl tert-butyldimethylsilyl phosphite with N,N-diethyl-2-formylbenzamides followed by treatment with methanesulfonic acid.
