Optically active 3-butene-1,2-diols and 4-heteroatom-substituted 3-butene-1, 2-diols are prepared in a stereoselective manner starting from virtually optically pure 3-trimethylsilylglycidol (2,3-epoxy-3-trimethylsilylpropan-1-ol, 99% enantiomeric excess).
