The pyranosyl unit 11 (2-formyl-6-[1,2-(isopropylidenedioxy)ethyl]-5-methyltetrahydropyran) of tetronasin was prepared from D-glyceraldehyde acetonide and a coupling reaction between 11 and the sulfone 13 (5-(1-methoxyethyl)-3-methyl-2-[1-methyl-2-(phenylsulfonyl)ethyl]tetrahydrofuran) of a tetrahydrofuranyl fragment gave the desired C14-C27 fragment of tetronasin.
