A general route to 6-substituted salicylaldehydes from salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxybenzaldehyde) via the dianion 4 of salicylaldehyde aminal 3 [2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-dimethylimidazolidine] is reported.
