Trifluoroacetic acid induced ionic hydrogenation of organic compounds (e.g., ketones, alcohols, alkenes) with triethylsilane as a reducing agent is improved by the addition of ammonium fluoride, making separation of the products easier due to the formation of volatile fluorotriethylsilane. Similarly triethylsilane-pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) is found to be a highly efficient novel ionic hydrogenation system.
