In the presence of a catalytic amount of Ln(OTf)3 or Sc(OTf)3, the reactions of imines with silyl enolates and the Diels-Alder reactions of imines with dienes proceeded smoothly to afford the corresponding β-amino ester derivatives and tetrahydropyridine or tetrahydroquinoline derivatives, respectively, in high yields.
