Palladium(0) catalysed coupling of the serine-derived organozinc reagent 3 with 1-iodoferrocene and 1,1’-diiodoferrocene gave the corresponding protected ferrocenylalanine and 1,1’-ferrocenylbis(alanine) derivatives 6 and 8, respectively. Analogous coupling of (haloarene)tricarbonylchromium complexes with zinc reagent 3, and subsequent decomplexation, gave phenylalanine derivatives 11, including the 2-fluorophenylalanine derivative 11b.
