The synthesis of the highly congested dendrimer tris(α,α-bispentachlorophenyl-2,4,5,6-tetrachlrotolyl)methane (1) is not feasible by a stepwise divergent synthesis due to the large steric impedance. Its synthesis has been achieved by exhaustive chlorination of the parent dendritic hydrocarbon 5 under conditions that avoid fragmentation of either species.
