A pinacol coupling of benzaldehyde with a homogeneous divalent titanium reagent, TiCl2-TMEDA-THF, gave the dl-hydrobenzoin with a high diastereoselectivity; by using an optically active amine instead of TMEDA, the reaction proceeded enantioselectively.
