Infections after Unreamed Intramedullary Nailing
Publication History
Publication Date:
11 September 2002 (online)
Introduction
Intramedullary nailing has gained in importance over the past two decades due to the advantages of rapid secondary bone healing as well as an earlier mobilization and load-bearing ability of the stabilized long bone fracture [3]. Unreamed intramedullary nailing deserves special mention because it allows, in contrast to reamed nailing, the primary, definitive management of both first and second degree, open fractures with an intramedullary load-bearing device [4]. Unreamed intramedullary nailing also has the advantage of a lower embolism risk so that definitive primary management of the thigh with intramedullary nailing is also possible in polytraumatized patients.
