Rotational Deformities after Operative Treatment of Diaphyseal Femur and Tibia Fractures - A Rare Complication?

Abstract
In the course of a retrospective analysis after osteosynthetic management of 129 diaphyseal femur and 143 diaphyseal tibia fractures, clinical examination in 12 cases (4.4 %) led to the suspicion of a rotational deformity of the femur (n = 7) and tibia (n = 5). However, rotational CT scans only confirmed rotational deformities requiring correction in 8 cases (4 %). The clinically determined torsion angles of the femur were on average 11°, those of the tibia 13.3°, less than the values obtained by CT. By means of a modified digital method we directly measured the torsion angles between the femur neck axis and the femur condyles on the one hand and between the tibia plateau and the ankle joint on the other hand [1] [2] [7].
