Summary
Substance abuse and dependence are psychiatric disorders and currently interpreted as a complex disease process of the brain resulting from recurring substance intake and drug action. Its clinical phenotype is modulated by developmental, environmental, psychosocial, psychological, neurobiological as well as genetic vulnerability factors. The purpose of the present article is to summarize briefly current evidence for a genetic etiology of addiction. Results and implications of major psychiatric-genetic research strategies are presented.
Key words
addiction, genetic risk factors - candidate genes - vulnerability
