Summary
With an infection rate of up to 20 % of the general population and an annual mortality rate in Germany of up to 10000 persons, influenza is an illness that must be taken seriously. In particular the chronically ill and elderly patients are at risk from secondary bacterial pneumonia. The annual vaccination of risk groups is the most effective measure currently available. An important consideration would appear to be that physicians and care-providing personnel should not be capable of transmitting the influenza virus during the incubation period or during the course of a symptom-free illness to unprotected persons. In order to protect both the medical personnel and their patients, vaccination of this professional group is recommended.
