Reconstructive Hair Transplantation of the Face and Scalp

Most of the work reported in the literature on hair restoration is focused on the treatment of male pattern baldness. The use of follicular unit micrografts and minigrafts has become a great adjunct to reconstructive plastic surgery, particularly enhancing aesthetics.

In this issue we focus on a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art techniques in hair restoration for both aesthetic and reconstructive cases. Experts present their philosophy and technique on each of the topics.

We start with the introduction of the technique of micrografting and minigrafting in large numbers and follow with the role scalp flaps (temporo-parieto-occipital, the Juri flap); scalp reduction (using the Nordstrom suture); tissue expansion; reconstruction of eyebrows and eyelashes; the use of micrografts and minigrafts in enhancing aesthetics in the reconstruction of the face and scalp; the correction of poor results of hair restoration; the use of lasers in hair transplantation. Finally, we look at getting started in micrografting and minigrafting and take a glimpse into the future, particularly the state of the exciting project of hair follicle cloning.
