Significance

In this paper, the authors reported that the proton-exchanged montmorillonite (H-mont) catalyzed the addition reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to alkenes. Thus, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds 1 reacted with various alkenes 2 in the presence of the H-mont catalyst to give the corresponding adducts 3 in good to excellent yields (eq. 1). The H-mont catalyst was recovered by simple filtration and reused without significant loss of catalytic activity. The H-mont catalyst also showed good catalytic activities in the addition reactions of 1 with alcohols 4 (eq. 2), and carboxylic acids 6 with 2 (eq. 3).
