Gängigen Kommunikationsmodellen zufolge verläuft eine Kommunikation dann erfolgreich, wenn Sender und Empfänger, also beide Gesprächspartner, den gleichen Code benutzen. Ob es sich um verbale oder nonverbale „Zeichen” handelt, ist dabei unwichtig. Wie sich die Arzt-Patienten-Kommunikation in den Werken von Theodor Fontane und Thomas Mann gestaltet, ist Gegenstand dieses Artikels. Bei „Effi Briest” findet in der Regel eine gelungene Kommunikation statt, sogar wenn die Dinge unausgesprochen bleiben. Im Gegensatz dazu bleibt die Konversation zwischen Arzt und Patient im „Zauberberg” stets erfolglos, was den zeitgenössischen Wandel über das Bild von Ärzten und deren Funktion widerspiegelt.
Common communication theories state that communication acts succeed if senders and recipients of code agree on the meaning of the signs they exchange. This may happen regardless of the nature of the code, be verbal or non-verbal. This paper investigates how the doctor-to-patient communication is depicted in Theodor Fontane's novel „Effi Briest” and some texts of Thomas Mann's opus. It turns out that this communication seems to work to a large extent between Effi and her medicine, even if many things remain unsaid. In contrast, in the „Magic Mountain” conversation acts between doctors and patients consistently fail which reflects the contemporary change regarding the idea of doctors and their role.
