Adipositas in der Antike

Zusammenfassung

Dickleibigkeit ist in der Geschichte unserer westlichen Gesellschaft seit der Antike ein vielbehandeltes Thema, das nicht nur in der Medizin, sondern gleichermaßen auch in gesellschaftlich-historischem Kontext begegnet. In der antiken Medizin wurde die Dickleibigkeit auf Maßlosigkeit der Nahrungsaufnahme, auf zu große Trägheit, aber auch auf von Umwelt und Lebensweise bedingte Konstitution zurückgeführt. Dagegen findet sich in der historisch-philosophischen Literatur vor allem die Betonung der Maßlosigkeit, die als moralisch minderwertig betrachtet wurde.

Abstract

Obesity has been a much-debated topic in antiquity that is not only discussed in medicine, but also in socio-historical contexts. In ancient medicine, obesity was attributed to excess of food intake, too much inertia, but also due to environment and constitution. On the other hand, in historical-philosophical literature there is above all the emphasis on excessiveness, which was regarded as morally inferior.
