Sonographic Diagnosis of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Lesions – Part III: Lesions of the Corpus Callosum
Sonografische Diagnose der hypoxisch-ischämischen Enzephalopathie – Teil III: Läsionen des Corpus callosumsIntroduction
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a devasting condition which may result in death or severe neurological deficits in children. Hypoxic ischemic insults (HII) in term infants cause lesions in the border zones of vascular supply. Depending on the severity of the insult, the cortex and adjacent white matter, deep nuclear structures especially the basal ganglia (putamen and caudate nucleus) and the thalamus and the posterior limb of the internal capsule may be injured.
Another injured anatomical structure that is often overlooked is the corpus callosum. Especially severe and prolonged hypoxic events may cause injury of the corpus callosum. The presented paper shows that high-resolution sonography can visualize lesions of the corpus callosum in HII.
