Abstract

The sudden symptom onset with partially severe stridor or dyspnea in patients with induced laryngeal obstruction (ILO) still represents a diagnostic challenge in clinical practice. In addition to a targeted anamnesis with exclusion of possible causes, continuous flexible laryngoscopy (CFE) is considered as gold standard for the diagnosis of exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO). Disease specific patient education and speech therapy focusing on respiratory techniques often lead to a significant improvement in symptoms. Current explanatory models emphasize neurogenic, functional, and aerodynamic causes. Further studies on underlying causes may reveal which treatment methods are most effective.
