Introduction

Paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) arising from paraganglia, neuroendocrine structures pertaining to the autonomic nervous system that extend from the skull base to the pelvis. The majority of these neoplasms (90%) originate from the adrenal gland and are referred to as pheochromocytomas (PCCs), whereas extradrenal NETs are known as PGLs, and can arise from the abdomen (85%), or, more rarely, the chest (12%) or the head and cervical region (3%). (Pellitteri PK, et al. Oral Oncol. 2004; 40(6): 563–575.) The incidence of PGL is estimated at 2–8 cases per million, with a peak between the 3rd and 5th decade (Garcia-Carbonero R. et al. Clin Transl Oncol. 2021; 23(10): 1995–2019).
