Abstract
The genetic bases of the photoconvulsive reaction (PCR) as well as the possible genetic relations to other EEG criteria were studied by means of EEG examinations of 645 siblings of mainly epileptic patients and 662 brain-healthy control children. The occurrence of PCR is definitely age-dependent. The age distribution of positive findings shows a bimodal distribution among the female siblings with a lowest incidence in the 9—10 year old children. Once more could be shown that genetic factors are of determining importance for the manifestation of the photoconvulsive reaction. — Among the patients' siblings the generalized bilateral-synchronous types of PCR were observed more often than in the control children, in whom the parieto-occipital PCR is more frequent. Among the siblings of epileptic patients the occurrence of PCR is apparently dependent on additional, possibly genetic factors. — The mode of inheritance cannot be concluded from the results. A multifactorial system must be taken into consideration. — It has been investigated by statistical analyses, whether and to what extent other, genetically determined criteria exhibit a more than incidental statistical relation to the PCR. According to the results, spikes and waves in the resting and hyperventilation EEG are of a genetic different origin. The abnormal theta rhythms and the PCR also prove to be independent on each other. Definite relations exist between the occipital delta rhythms and PCR. Siblings of photosensitive probands with delta rhythms show a PCR definitely less frequently than the siblings of photosensitive probands without delta rhythms. These relationships are discussed.
Zusammenfassung
Anhand von EEG-Ableitungen bei 645 Geschwistern von überwiegend epileptischen Patienten und 662 hirngesunden Kontrollkindern werden die genetischen Grundlagen der photokonvulsiven Reaktion (PCR) sowie mögliche genetische Beziehungen zu anderen EEG-Merkmalen untersucht. Die PCR tritt ausgeprägt altersgebunden auf. Die Altersverteilung der positiven Befunde zeigt bei den weiblichen Geschwistern eine bimodale Verteilung mit einem Tiefpunkt bei den 9-bis 10jährigen Kindern. — Erneut kann durch die Ergebnisse belegt werden, daß für die Entstehung der photokonvulsiven Reaktion genetische Momente von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung sind. — Bei den Patientengeschwistern sind generalisierte bilateral-synchrone Reaktionsformen häufiger als bei Kontrollkindern, bei denen eine parieto-occipital begrenzte PCR häufiger vorkommt. In den Geschwisterschaften von Epileptikern wird die Ausprägung der PCR offenbar durch zusätzliche, womöglich genetische Faktoren mitbestimmt. — Die Art des Erbmodus kann aus den Ergebnissen nicht abgeleitet werden. Ein multifaktorielles System muß erwogen werden. — Durch statistische Analysen wird geprüft, ob und inwieweit andere, genetisch determinierte EEG-Merkmale in mehr als zufälliger statistischer Beziehung zur PCR stehen. Nach den Ergebnissen sind spikes and waves im Ruhe-und Hyperventilations-EEG und die PCR genetisch unterschiedlicher Natur. Die abnorme Theta-Rhythmisierung und die PCR erweisen sich ebenso als voneinander unabhängig. Zwischen occipitalen Delta-Rhythmen und PCR dagegen bestehen eindeutige Beziehungen. Bei den Geschwistern von photosensiblen Probanden mit Delta-Rhythmen wird eine PCR eindeutig seltener gefunden als bei den Geschwistern von photosensiblen Probanden ohne Delta-Rhythmen.
