Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour of the Stomach in a Young Child with Oesophageal Stricture

Introduction

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. They usually present after the age of 30 and are rare in childhood. They are usually found in the submucosa of the stomach and small bowel and demonstrate a variable spectrum of benign and malignant characteristics with unpredictable behaviour [7]. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding or anaemia is often the presenting symptom. In this case report we describe a male infant who had correction of oesophageal atresia at birth and was found to have a gastric GIST 20 months later at routine endoscopy for oesophageal dilatation.
