
Die weltweite Zunahme von übergewichtigen und adipösen Menschen wird von vielen Experten als massive Bedrohung des Gesundheitssystems betrachtet. Als wichtigste Ursache wird in der Öffentlichkeit die Ernährung angesehen. Dementsprechend dominieren Ernährungsumstellungen und Diäten als empfohlene Interventionen. Allein schon das regelhafte Scheitern von Diäten sollte zum Umdenken anregen. Aber noch wichtiger ist das sog. American Paradox: Die Menschen essen weniger, aber die Zahl der übergewichtigen Menschen steigt. Die Lösung ist relativ einfach: Der beständige Rückgang an körperlicher Aktivität ist die treibende Kraft der Adipositasepidemie.
Abstract
The global increase of overweight and obesity is considered by many experts as a massive threat to the health system. In the view of most people the main cause is food and nutrition and accordingly diets are the recommended interventions. The evidence for the failure of diets should be a reason to think this over. But a more important reason is the so-called American Paradox: People eat less, but obesity is increasing. The solution is simple; the continuing decline of physical activity is the driving force of the obesity epidemic.
