Summary

Incidents of poisoning are often suspected in diseased animals when no clear diagnosis can be forwarded. A retrospective study of confirmed and probable cases recorded by the consultation service of the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre (STIC) revealed that, from 1997 to 2006, a total of 1546 animals were affected by poisonings. Only 62 horses were involved but in 17 cases the poisoning was lethal. The toxic agents were mainly poisonous plants (72 %) and pesticides (15 %, primarily carbamates). This review illustrates how the decision support system http://www.clinitox.ch can be used to investigate the likelihood of a poisoning in horses and to identify possible toxic agents involved.
