Summary
Chaste tree
Vitex agnus-castus L., Lamiaceae, is a Mediterranean shrub, whose fruits have been applied against gynaecological disorders since ancient times in Greece. Aqueousethanolic extracts from V. agnus-castus fruits show binding to D2 dopamine receptors and exert dose-dependent dopaminergic activity. Additionally, V. agnus-castus extracts show binding to μ, δ and d opioid receptors and to estrogen receptors in vitro. By now, evidence is increasing that the extract exerts estrogenic effects in animal experiments. Clinical studies reveal that V. agnus-castus is effective in the treatment of mastalgia and premenstrual syndrome. The extract is usually well tolerated, but the use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended.
