Colic is a very common disorder in horses, which might often have fatal consequences. Prognosis depends not only on the condition of the animal and on the pathology itself, but also very much on the accuracy and the rapidity of the diagnosis allowing the initiation of the correct therapy. This short review discusses the pharmacological properties of the most commonly used analgesic drugs in horses with abdominal pain. It also aims to assist the clinician in selecting the right agent depending on the colic condition. This should help to achieve an efficient analgesia and at the same time also use analgesic agents for diagnostic purposes.
