Introduction
Physical neglect in the sense of lack of food and fluids is considered to be rare in developed countries with a social support system. There are no valid data concerning the frequency of physical neglect in Germany. Fatal cases are published in a forensic context with respect to autopsy findings and legal outcome (Risse M et al., Rechtsmedizin 2010; 20: 211–218). The clinical treatment of a severely malnourished child depends on the symptoms presented (Boensch M et al., Klin Padiatr 2011; 223:40–42). With respect to physical and mental development the outcome in any individual case is not predictable. However, it can be assumed that child maltreatment and all forms of neglect have an adverse effect on cognitive development (Mills R et al., Pediatrics 2011:127:4–10). We present a case that followed a remarkable course with an unexpectedly positive outcome.
