Abstract

The synthesis of a recently identified and highly active sex pheromone of the longtailed mealybug, Pseudococcus longispinus is reported. A concise synthetic route, use of the under explored Meyer–Schuster rearrangement, Claisen rearrangement, and ring-closing metathesis are the highlights of this work.

  • 8 There was no product formation observed in case of conventional Wittig reaction. However, the desired product was isolated in very poor yield using Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction with NaH base under reflux conditions for 48 h. Although, a Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction on a similar substrate was reported to give moderate yields of products, it was not successful in our hands. See: Li J.-Q, Peters B, Andersson PG. Chem.
