Nicht umsonst wurde die chronisch-rezidivierende Polyneuropathie schon in dem Artikel, der allgemein als Erstbeschreibung der CIDP gilt, zusammen mit ihrem Ansprechen auf Kortikosteroide beschrieben [1]. Schon damals warnte Austin vor dem Kurzschluss, die Wirkung der Kortikosteroide unkritisch als „antientzündlich“ einzuordnen, verwies auf noch unbekannte Wirkmechanismen und betonte die Rolle des Ödems von Nerven und Nervenwurzeln in der Pathogenese der Erkrankung. 1982 zeigte die Gruppe um Peter Dyck in der Mayo-Klinik, dass Prednison bei der CIDP besser hilft als keine Behandlung [2].
