Patient Blood Management is a new clinical concept addressing anaemia, blood loss, and hypoxia as modifiable risk factors that may result in transfusion long before transfusion may even be considered. By education of the employees, by modern therapy of the anaemia and its reasons like vitamin deficiency, iron deficiency and lack of erythropoesis as well as creation of conditions of a blood transfusion (normothermia, normocalcaemia, well-balanced acid base), blood transfusions can be reduced by approximately 40–60 percent. This is not only important for a single hospital, but is also health-economically correct and makes sense. Patient Blood Management is win win win situation. Win for the patients (better postal-surgical outcome, lower mortality and morbidity, shortened hospitalisation. Win for the health system by savings within haemotherapy and win for the doctors by better patient's care.
