Summary
The IHS-criteria define four different primary headache syndromes with chronic daily headaches: 1) chronic migraine, 2) episodic and chronic tension type headache, 3) hemicrania continua, 4) new daily persisting headache. An important differential diagnosis is furthermore the medication overuse headache. The German, Austrian, and Swiss Headache societies present now the first joint guideline about the therapy of these headache syndromes. The current literature was reviewed and summarized. The therapy recommendations do not only include the scientific evidence but also the practical relevance.
