Summary

In light of high prevalence rates of child abuse and neglect and resulting emotional and behavioral problems the pediatrician’s office is an optimal environment to screen for child abuse and neglect and possible developmental risks and psychological sequelae. This article consists of two case studies that exemplarily demonstrate the advantages of actively assessing maltreatment history and possible resulting emotional and behavioral problems in all pediatric patients to enable early identification of victims suffering from mental health disorders and timely referral to appropriate psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatments. An early intervention approach for pediatricians is presented.
