Forty-nine cases of proximal phalangeal fracture were presented over a 13-year period. The fractures affected a variety of breeds and ages of horse and occurred during a number of different activities. Forty horses were treated, 34 surgically and 6 conservatively. Eighty-five percent subsequently became sound. Of 21 treated racehorses 14 subsequently raced.
