Die obstruktive Schlafapnoe (OSA) ist durch einen repetitiven partiellen oder vollständigen Verschluss der oberen Atemwege im Schlaf charakterisiert. Die daraus resultierenden Schwankungen des Atemflusses bewirken wiederkehrende Desaturationen, die häufig erst zusammen mit unterschwelligen Weckreaktionen („Arousals”) mit kurzfristiger Anspannung der dilatatorischen Muskeln der oberen Atemwege terminiert werden. Man geht inzwischen davon aus, dass 6–20 % Prozent der Bevölkerung an einer obstruktiven Schlafapnoe leiden, bei Männern jenseits des 40. Lebensjahr liegt die Prävalenz sogar bei über 40 % (1).
