Zusammenfassung
Aktuell findet in Deutschland und weiteren westlichen Ländern eine teils sehr emotional geführte Diskussion um eine (weiterführende) Legalisierung von Cannabis als Arzneimittel, aber auch zu Genuss- und Rauschzwecken statt. Von den Gegnern einer Legalisierung wird hierbei oftmals die Historie der Droge übersehen, die Jahrtausende zurückreicht und sich in verschiedenen Hochkulturen weltweit nachweisen lässt. Ausgeklammert wird ebenso häufig, unter welchen Umständen es überhaupt im 20. Jh. zu einem nahezu globalen Verbot kommen konnte. Die Befürworter hingegen überzeichnen nicht selten den tatsächlich belegten medizinischen Nutzen und verdrängen dabei auch meist die unerwünschten Wirkungen der Droge. Dieser Artikel soll eine sachlichere Diskussion anregen, aber auch auf den noch bestehenden Forschungsbedarf hinweisen.

Demon, commercial and medicinal plant: On the history of cannabis and recent developments
Currently, a partially emotional discussion is taking place in Germany and other Western countries about the (further) legalization of cannabis not only as a medicinal product, but also for pleasure and intoxication purposes. In the discussion, the opponents of cannabis legalization often overlook the history of the drug, which dates back thousands of years and can be detected in various cultures around the world. They exclude a closer scrutiny of the circumstances that led to an almost global ban in the 20th century. Cannabis proponents on the other hand often over-emphasize the verifiable medical benefits of the drug and also usually underplay its undesirable effects. This article aims at encouraging a more objective discussion about cannabis and provides information on areas that require more research
