An erster Stelle bei der Versorgung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit einer Bewusstseinsstörung stehen die ABC-Richtlinien.

Die häufigsten Krankheitsbilder sind Infektionen, Intoxikationen, epileptische Anfälle und Stoffwechselentgleisungen, bei Letzteren v. a. diabetische Ketoazidose und Hypoglykämie.

Der Quantifizierung der Bewusstseinsstörung dient die Glasgow Coma Scale oder alternativ die AVPU-Skala.

Wichtige anamnestische Daten und ein Kurzbefund (meningitische Zeichen, Asymmetrien der Motorik und/oder Pupillen, Hirndruckzeichen, Körpertemperatur) vervollständigen die Notfalldiagnostik.
