It frequently results from cardiotropic viral infection followed by inflammatory myocardial destruction. Endomyocardial biopsy is still considered the gold standard in diagnosing myocarditis. During clinical work-up, however, diagnosis is often presumed depending on clinical presentation and non-invasive diagnostic test results. In this regard, cardiac magnetic resonance is particularly important as it offers various techniques to detect inflammatory alterations of the myocardium.
